As a tutor for a high school student, I read the story today and was just searching some more material with which to provide my student. Personally, I do not find this story the best example for discussing the general genre of short stories, but Brautigan is for sure a nice pick in broadening the literary horizon.

Regards from Germany, JessAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6383367803115732345.post-82429034974568101852010-09-24T21:06:20.424-07:002010-09-24T21:06:20.424-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6383367803115732345.post-8439966626836641062010-06-15T03:39:39.125-07:002010-06-15T03:39:39.125-07:00He died of colon cancer 10 years after chugging a ...He died of colon cancer 10 years after chugging a glass of poison.

Think about that.

Hundreds of the desperate and impoverished kids who he forced to spray said poison without saftey equipment are today suffering from a range of cancers and auto-immune disorders, and suing in a desperate effort to force the State which betrayed their trust to at least fund an impartial study to determine what the still largely unknown effects of this poison were.

He was no hero. His high school English class is using "The Bus" as a way of teaching the kids how to analyze and write about literature. It's an odd short-short to be using for such an exercise at this level in an ESL class (too many grammatical quirks), but that's what they're doing. I searched the story on Google, because I didn't remember it and had the impression that the photocopied version the kids have was not the complete version. But it is.
Cheers,
SusanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6383367803115732345.post-43497493030407750152009-09-08T23:12:11.303-07:002009-09-08T23:12:11.303-07:00Thanks for the kind words, Sue.
